Here are some neat Facts about the Woodwind Family!
Flute=The Flutebecame very popular in Germany in 1200.. The original flute had tone holes- no keys, until the late 1600's. Soon thereafer, the Baroque flute was invented and was made of wood. In 1847, Theobald Boehm redesigned the flute to what we know it as today. The Boehm system improved intonation, the tuning of the flute, and made the tone louder. The Boehm system made the flute notes easier to play!
Flutes are made of silver or silver alloy, gold and platinum. Flutes can also be made from a combination of those metals. The Flute family includes the piccolo, alto flute, bass flute and Contrabass flute.
Oboe= The oboe is based on the shawm, invented in 1200. The oboe became popular in French royalty courts around 1650. The name oboe is from the French word "hautbois," which means "high wood." In 1700, the Oboe becamse a member of the orchestra. In 1825, the key system was finalized and is what we use today. The oboe family includes the oboe d'amore, the English horn and the baritone oboe. The Baritone oboe was discontinued and the Bassoon takes over that part.
Oboes can be made from plastic, ebonite or rosewood and grenadilla wood. Keys are usually made of silver alloy or silver.
Clarinet=The history of the clarinet can be traced back to the 1600's as the chalumeau. The chalumeau had 2 keys and a single reed. It had a low and limited range. The low range of the clarinet today is called the chalumeau register. In 1700 a German instrument maker named Dnner invented the clarinet by improving the range of the chalumeau. By 1750, it had 5 keys and became part of the orchestra. In 1844, a big change happened to the clarinet. Two French Musicians- Bufet and Klose applied the Boehm flute key system to the Clarinet. They positioned each tone hole so that each note would have the same quality of tone. They also made a key system to cover the tone holes. The Boehm key system is what we currently use for the modern clarinet.
Clarinets are made of ebonite, plastic or grenadilla wood. The keys are made of a metal alloy or silver.
The Clarinet family also includes: the Soprano Clarinet Bb- (the most common), Alto clarinet, Bass clarinet and Contra Bass Clarinet.
Saxophone=
The saxophone was created in 1841 by Adolphe Sax who was from Belgium. He moved to Paris and patented his new invention in 1846. Adolphe actually created 14 sized saxophones. 7 for Orchestra in te key of C and F, and 7 for Band, in the key of Bb and Eb. Only 4 saxophones are still in popular use today. The current saxophone family consists of: Soprano Saxophone in Bb, Alto Saxophone in Eb, Tenor Saxophone in Bb, and Baritone Saxophone in Eb.
The Saxophone is made from Brass metal alloys and the key pads are made from either leather or snythetic materials.
Bassoon= The origin of the bassoon it dated back to early 1600's. A nickname for the basson was called "dulcian," which means "soft and sweet" in Latin. Between 1643-1715, French instrument makers created a new bassoon to include 4 separate pieces. Finally in 1820, Carl Almenrader and Adam Heckel redesigned the instrument to make the modern day bassoon.
Bassoons are made of plastic, ebonite, and various types of wood. Keys are made from metal or silver alloys.
The bassoon is from the Double reed family.
