Sharing Day Music Project
About 3 times a year, Students are able to participate in a group sharing day. Students perform 1 scale, and 2 songs during Class. Students also create a Music Program, with Title,Composer, Program Notes, and Performer to share with the class and their family! This Project is exciting and encompasses the New York State Standards for Music. Students love to share their work. We also explore music instruments in the bandroom as time permits. We start with the percussion Auxiliary Family, such as the traingles, cowbells, shakers and also the glockenspiel. We move on to other instruments as interests and time permits.
Composing Unit
Students are encouraged to create their own music. Criteria includes: rhythms, notes and rests, flats or sharps, time signature, Title, beginning, middle and ending.
March is Music in Our Schools Month!
Every year, we discuss the benefits and reasons why we like music and how it benefits us in our learning and musical studies. These words, pictures and thoughts, show that music is very important in the lives of our students!
We learn a variety of music from around the world this year. We also play solo, in small groups and in a large ensemble.
Music Literacy Project Grant
Mrs. Head won a Music Grant from the OCMEA Association in Winter 2017. It encompasses word searches, books and games to reinforce vocabulary in the Instrumental classroom setting. It also contains puzzles and Historical Facts and stories about Composers from the different Eras. We will use these materials in and out of class.
Jazz Improvisation Unit
Mrs. Head acquired materials from a Music Grant from the Orange County Music Educator's Association in Spring 2012! We use these materials every May to participate in our Jazz Unit after the concert. We learn and demonstrate the blues scale and the basic building blocks of Improvisation. These materials make creating improvisation very approachable for young musicians. Students have a high interest in modern rhythms, jazz and rock music. This is one avenue for the students to express that style with the creativity of their own skills.
